In a decisive move, authorities have removed several illegal structures from a land site in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg, as part of a broader effort to curb land invasions in the city.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) led the operation on Monday, demolishing 50 makeshift structures in Ennerdale Extension 11.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla reaffirmed the department’s commitment to upholding the rule of law regarding land use and urban management. “This operation is part of our ongoing efforts to tackle the rising land invasions across the City of Johannesburg,” Fihla said.
The multi-disciplinary team, including the By-Laws Management Unit, Public Order Policing, Operations, and K9 Unit, removed the structures without resistance. The operation comes after a tense incident last week, where JMPD officers were violently attacked by a mob at the same site.

Fihla praised the officers for their restraint, saying their tactical retreat prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome. “If officers had retaliated against such aggression, it could have resulted in catastrophic loss of life,” he said.
The JMPD has vowed to continue monitoring Ennerdale Extension 11 and other problem areas to prevent the re-erection of illegal structures.
Fihla urged the community to cooperate with law enforcement and resolve land and housing issues through legal means. “It is unacceptable for officers to be shot at while lawfully enforcing city bylaws,” he said.
The operation is part of a larger effort by the JMPD and the Red Ants to address land invasions in areas like Lenasia, Lenasia South, and along the K43. The department is determined to uphold the law and ensure orderly urban development.
The community is advised to report any further illegal activities to the authorities, and work together to maintain a safe and lawful environment. The JMPD will continue to enforce the law, protecting both residents and officers.
