The two occupants of the bakkie were seriously injured and had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters.

“The paramedics arrived to find chaos and severe damage to both vehicles,” said Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for Advanced Life Support (ALS) Paramedics.

The injured were stabilized and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Authorities, including Metro Police and the South African Police Service, are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.

The incident has sparked concerns about road safety on the N3, a major route connecting Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

The investigation will determine the exact cause of the collision, but initial reports suggest the taxi was traveling in the Pietermaritzburg-bound lane, heading towards Durban.
